Lisa Kimberly Glickman in Solo Expo "Voices for the Wild" Part One from

May 28 to June 23, 2024 at the Kirkland Library.

Vernissage: June 9 from 1pm to 4:30pm

Address: Kirkland Library / 17100 Hymus Blvd. / Kirkland, QC

“Voices for the Wild” is a series of large-scale paintings that honour female land defenders and environmentalists doing important work across Canada and in a variety of habitats—giving voices to the wild.

I pose these heroic women together with animals affected by ecological degradation in the areas they protect. My subjects range in age from their teens through their 70s. All are passionate about their field of work.

I chose to paint these women from different backgrounds with different areas of expertise—scientists, authors, professors, artists and activists—to show that anyone can be an activist and use their skills to make changes in the world.

For this deeply personal project, I am inspired by expressionism, magic realism and landscape and wildlife art to paint portraits incorporating embroidery, collage, fibre art, mixed media and foraged wood.

I show how Canadian landscapes are rich and full of life to cherish, not just resources to plunder. While nature provides my main source of motivation, the beauty and strength of the women activists as well as that of the animals that struggle to survive and thrive also inspire me.

I believe the stories we tell through the art we create can show people what the world is—what our environment looks like and what challenges it faces—but also what the world could become. For this reason, creating art about the natural world using upcycled and natural materials is itself a form of activism, capable of inspiring others not only to create their own art but to find creative solutions to our current environmental crisis.

The first “Voices for the Wild” show is at Bibliothèque Kirkland in Kirkland, Quebec, May 27 through June 25, 2024. The vernissage will be held June 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. At 4 p.m., some of my subjects will describe their work live or via video.
