Montreal-based Canadian artist JC Little is an award-winning film maker, visual storyteller, and painter, with an animation industry career spanning more than 35 years. JC has worked as animator, producer, creator and director, on TV commercials, animated series, movies and independent short films. She is best known online as The Animated Woman, a collection of illustrated stories and films with a distinct visual style. A life-long artist, JC is immersed in her work painting in watercolours: pleinair practice, animal portraits, birds, and landscapes and magical realism.

Her journey as an artist has taken her from animation, to sequential art, and eventually to painting. By reducing a visual narrative to its simplest form, even stick figures might become a poetic force, which led her to produce a collection of illustrated stories and short films as The Animated Woman. This distillation narrowed her focus to the elemental in the storytelling aspect of her subsequent work in watercolour. Stories are coaxed into the light in a single image; a bird’s awareness of being observed, the subtle postural language of a dog pointing, the longing of a steer gazing up at a balloon on the wind, and the places marked in some way by people. She is drawn to magical realism, and classical images with a twist, combined with wordplay and emotional depth. She pushes the medium of watercolour to carry her stories with contrasting layers of granulation and transparency.
